Recently on her podcast, Codie Sanchez spoke about the relationship of young boys training Jiu Jitsu and the development of Inhibitory Control.
Inhibitory control is a cognitive process that allows an individual to suppress impulses and resist distractions to achieve a goal. It involves managing one's attention, behavior, and emotions to avoid reacting impulsively or inappropriately. This ability is crucial for tasks that require self-discipline and focused effort.
For example, if you're working on a project and feel the urge to check your phone, inhibitory control helps you resist that distraction and stay on task. Similarly, if you're in a heated conversation, inhibitory control helps you manage your emotional responses and communicate more thoughtfully.
It's a key component of executive function, which encompasses various mental skills needed for planning, decision-making, and problem-solving. Inhibitory control develops throughout childhood and is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors.
Studies have shown that young boys who train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 1-3 times a week for 45 minutes per session on average showed improved development of inhibitory control leading to greater self discipline. This is likely due to the development of a mind-body connection, problem solving ability and reduced impulsiveness that Jiu Jitsu requires. As being impulsive can lead to negative consequences in sparring, training and competition.
